The Center

The Center for Studies on Society, Health, and Place is dedicated to designing, promoting, and conducting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific research on individual and collective well-being and health. Its focus extends to the complex interactions between health, society, and Place, encompassing the fields of social sciences, humanities, medical and biological sciences, cognitive sciences, and engineering.

The Center adopts a cultural and scientific approach that goes beyond the traditional concept of health as merely the "absence of organic disease." Instead, it seeks to integrate diverse aspects of health—including organic, psychological, social, environmental, institutional, and economic factors—into its research activities.

Established on the initiative of the Department of Political and Social Sciences (DISPeS), the Center operates in collaboration with several other departments, including the Department of Biology, Ecology, and Earth Sciences (DiBEST), the Department of Cultures, Education, and Society (DiCES), the Department of Economics, Statistics, and Finance (DESF), the Department of Pharmacy, Health, and Nutrition Sciences (DFSSN), the Department of Mechanical, Energy, and Management Engineering (DIMEG), the Department of Computer, Modeling, Electronic, and Systems Engineering (DIMES), the Department of Environmental Engineering (DIAm), the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DeMaCS).

Aree di ricerca e progetti attivi

This research area focuses on the development and implementation of advanced technological solutions to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases. Through applied biomedical research, it explores new medical devices and sensors, telemedicine tools, and artificial intelligence algorithms for clinical data analysis. A key aspect of this work involves the creation of remote patient monitoring systems, enabling more efficient and personalized care.

In addition to technological advancements, the research also examines strategies for optimizing healthcare processes, enhancing hospital efficiency, and tailoring treatments to individual needs. By integrating these innovations, the goal is to improve both the quality of life for patients and the overall effectiveness of healthcare services.

Ongoing Projects

This research area focuses on promoting a longer, healthier life by analyzing the factors that influence aging and overall well-being, both individually and within communities. It explores strategies to enhance quality of life, including proper nutrition, regular physical activity, avoidance of risky behaviors, and mental health support. Additionally, it investigates innovative technologies and preventive approaches aimed at reducing the risk of age-related diseases.

A key aspect of this research is the development of mental health programs designed to address stress, anxiety, and depression, fostering psychological balance and overall well-being throughout life. The ultimate goal is to create sustainable solutions that support both physical and mental health, ensuring a higher quality of life at every stage of aging.

Ongoing Projects

This research area examines the social, economic, and environmental factors that shape the distribution of resources and opportunities across different geographical areas, social groups, and generations. It investigates the root causes and consequences of social, economic, and spatial inequalities, exploring their impact on health, access to healthcare services, and overall well-being at both individual and community levels.

A key focus is the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the effects of place-based policies, social policies, and macro- and microeconomic interventions on well-being, healthcare access, and health disparities. By analyzing these dynamics, the research promotes solutions aimed at fostering greater social equity and environmental sustainability.

Within this area, an observatory is dedicated to monitoring socio-economic and health inequalities in Calabria. Using advanced statistical and econometric models, along with predictive techniques from Statistical Learning, it provides valuable insights for evidence-based policymaking and targeted interventions.
